Key Points

  • The Evangelical Lutheran Church of England (ELCE) held its 71st Annual Synod on November 14-15, 2025, in Tottenham, north London.
  • Rev. Tapani Simojoki was installed as Chairman of the ELCE, succeeding Rev. George Samiec.
  • The synod theme was “The Joy of the Lord is Our Strength” (Nehemiah 8:10).
  • Rev. Simojoki had been elected Chairman during the 2024 synod but was installed in 2025 due to a year of overlap practice.
  • Rev. George Samiec served as Chairman from 2019 to 2025 and was also the European Region’s representative on the International Lutheran Council’s (ILC) board.
  • The synod concluded with a Divine Service during which Rev. Simojoki was installed by Rev. Samiec.
  • Rev. Simojoki emphasized the enduring joy of Christ’s death and resurrection as the source of strength.
  • Other ELCE officials, including Dr. Cynthia Lumley as Treasurer, were also installed during the synod.

What Happened at the ELCE’s 71st Annual Synod?

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of England convened its 71st Annual Synod from November 14 to 15, 2025, in Tottenham, north London. The gathering centered around the theme “The Joy of the Lord is Our Strength,” drawn from Nehemiah 8:10. This synod marked a significant leadership transition as Rev. Tapani Simojoki was formally installed as Chairman of the church body. The ELCE follows a tradition of a year-long overlap where the incoming Chairman is elected one year and installed the next, allowing for continuity in leadership. Consequently, although Rev. Simojoki was elected during the 2024 Annual Synod, his official installation took place during the 2025 synod. He succeeded Rev. George Samiec, who respectfully declined to seek another term after serving since 2019.

Who Is Rev. Tapani Simojoki and What Did He Say at His Installation?

Rev. Tapani Simojoki, installed as Chairman during the final Divine Service of the synod, preached on the theme of joy. In his sermon, Rev. Simojoki conveyed that

“it’s easier to say than to feel that the joy of the Lord is our strength,”

calling attention to a joy beyond mere emotion. He highlighted that this joy stems from the “unquenchable joy” available in Christ through His death for sins and the gift of eternal life via resurrection. This joy, he stressed, is an enduring source of strength for all Christians, one that cannot be taken away, affirming the central Christian belief in Jesus as Lord.

What Is the Role of the Outgoing Chairman Rev. George Samiec?

Rev. George Samiec has had a distinguished tenure as Chairman, first elected in 2019. He also served world Lutheranism as the European Region’s representative on the International Lutheran Council’s board of directors from 2019 to 2025. At the synod’s closing, Rev. Samiec acted as the celebrant for the Divine Service, during which he officially installed Rev. Simojoki as Chairman. His role in the transition was significant, ensuring a smooth handover of leadership.

Who Else Was Installed During the Synod?

Apart from the installation of Chairman Simojoki, other ELCE officials elected during the synod were also installed. Notably, Dr. Cynthia Lumley was installed as the church’s body treasurer. Several other individuals chosen to serve on various committees as part of the church’s governance structure were formally installed under Simojoki’s leadership.

What Does the Future Hold for ELCE Under Rev. Tapani Simojoki?

As the ELCE moves forward with its new leadership, the 71st Annual Synod also saw continued work on establishing a new church structure and considering a name change. Under Chairman Simojoki, the church is expected to maintain a focus on doctrinal strength and community growth, emphasising the enduring joy found in Christian faith as a foundation for its mission.
