Tottenham (North London News) October 2, 2026 — Tottenham Hotspur legend Ledley King believes that Micky van de Ven was the absolute right choice to make Tottenham captain despite the club’s struggles this season. Spurs find themselves near the bottom of the Premier League table and without a win after five games heading into the international break. Despite spending more than £300 million over the summer, Tottenham have so far failed to push on after securing Premier League survival on the final day of last season.
How did Ledley King react to Roberto De Zerbi’s captaincy decision?
As reported by journalist Alasdair Gold of Football.London, former Spurs captain Ledley King expressed firm confidence in manager Roberto De Zerbi’s decision-making process regarding the team’s leadership group. As cited by Chris Cowlin during a dedicated media interview with the former defender, King highlighted that Van de Ven possesses the fundamental leadership qualities required for the post.
According to King, handing the captain’s armband to the Dutch central defender represents a long-term investment in the squad’s core values. As quoted by Chris Cowlin of The 60 Second Spurs Update, King stated: “He is a top, top manager,” referring to De Zerbi’s overall strategic direction, while emphasizing that Van de Ven’s presence on and off the pitch provides necessary stability during difficult transition periods.
What is the background of this development?
Tottenham Hotspur entered the current campaign following a turbulent period characterized by significant structural changes across their football operations. Having narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of the previous Premier League campaign, the club’s ownership sanctioned a total expenditure exceeding £300 million during the summer transfer window to rebuild the first-team squad.
As part of this restructuring, manager Roberto De Zerbi elected to make major changes to the squad’s internal leadership framework. The decision to appoint Micky van de Ven as club captain was among the most prominent calls made during the pre-season period, designed to establish a new defensive spine and standard of accountability. However, initial on-field results have yielded a challenging five-match winless start prior to the international window, generating intense public debate regarding squad integration and leadership under the current coaching staff.
What is the prediction for Tottenham Hotspur and their supporters?
The public backing of Micky van de Ven’s captaincy by an influential figure such as Ledley King is anticipated to provide crucial short-term narrative support for manager Roberto De Zerbi and the Tottenham Hotspur squad. For the club’s match-going fanbase and broader stakeholder community, this endorsement helps reinforce patience during an awkward operational rebuild following a summer of heavy financial expenditure.
If Spurs manage to translate their high summer outlay into defensive consistency under Van de Ven’s leadership, the squad is expected to stabilize their position in the Premier League table post-international break. Conversely, should winless performances continue, pressure will inevitably increase on De Zerbi’s tactical system, putting further scrutiny on the senior leadership group to deliver immediate results.
