A murder investigation is underway in Leyton after a 24-year-old man was fatally stabbed in the early hours of Thursday morning. Four men have been arrested and remain in custody.
The attack took place in the early hours of Thursday as officers responded to reports of an altercation between a group of people on Saint George’s Road. When police arrived alongside paramedics, a man in his mid-twenties was found suffering from stab wounds. Despite the best efforts of the London Ambulance Service at the scene, he could not be saved.
Four men were detained nearby within a short time of the stabbing. All four, aged 22, 24, 24, and 25, were arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently being held in police custody as the investigation progresses.
Chief Superintendent Rhona Hunt, who leads policing across Waltham Forest, said the thoughts of everyone at the Met were with the victim’s loved ones. She acknowledged the concern that an incident of this nature inevitably causes within the local community and stressed that officers were working hard to understand exactly what happened in the hours leading up to the attack. She confirmed that while arrests had been made and the incident was believed to be isolated, a significant police presence would remain in the area as enquiries continued.
The stabbing is the latest in a deeply troubling pattern of fatal knife crime across North London in recent weeks. Filmmaking student Finbar Sullivan, 21, died after being stabbed at Primrose Hill on 7 April. Two men have since been charged in connection with that case. Thursday’s attack on Saint George’s Road adds to growing calls for urgent action on knife crime across the capital.
Anyone who witnessed the disturbance or the attack itself is urged to come forward. Information can be passed to the police by calling 101 and quoting reference 219/23APR. Those who wish to remain anonymous can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 at any time.
