Why Has Richarlison Been Omitted From Tottenham’s Squad?

Richarlison may have played his last match for Tottenham Hotspur after he was left out of the club’s 25-man Premier League squad list on Thursday.

Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi, speaking following a 2-0 home defeat by Newcastle United on Saturday, insisted Richarlison had

“said too many times he wants to leave”

and could bid farewell to the London club before the summer transfer window closed.

The Brazil forward released an incendiary social media post on Monday where he claimed

“never again will anyone decide my future for me”.

But talks over a potential return to Premier League rivals Everton, where he played from 2018 to 2022, stalled before Tuesday’s 11:00 pm (22:00 GMT) deadline in England.

Other transfer windows around the world remain open, however, and Trabzonspor have been linked with Richarlison ahead of Friday’s deadline in Turkey.

Richarlison, who currently remains a Spurs player, made his feelings clear on Monday with a remarkable outburst on Instagram.

As reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP), Richarlison stated that:

“After everything I’ve been through in the last few years, I’ve decided that never again will anyone decide my future for me.”

He added:

“I went through a lot of bad things, and almost all of them happened because decisions were made by other people. Pressure, threats, retaliation — none of that scares me. I’ve been through far worse, believe me.”

Continuing his statement, he wrote:

“I’ve always made it clear, every time I had the chance, that leaving for another club would only happen if it was also good for the club. If it wasn’t, I would never accept it. Just like I didn’t accept it when everything was going badly and they needed me.”

“I stayed and gave everything. So, I hope they treat my situation with the same respect I’ve always shown Spurs and everyone who worked with me during this period. Just don’t try to decide for me.”

The 29-year-old has struggled to make an impact at Tottenham since his move to north London four years ago.

What Additional Media Reports Reveal About The Decision?

As reported by BBC Sport, manager Roberto De Zerbi explained that Richarlison was not included in the top-flight registration list for the first half of the season. Following the defeat against Newcastle United, De Zerbi noted:

“Richarlison, I don’t know. He said too many times he wants to leave.”

BBC Sport further detailed that De Zerbi had previously stated it was

“not easy to find another striker like Richarlison”

when reflecting on the player’s value earlier in the window.

As reported by The Independent, the Tottenham hierarchy took the decision to inform Richarlison of his exclusion from the domestic squad prior to the deadline. The Independent confirmed that while domestic negotiations with Everton were unsuccessful, Turkish side Trabzonspor intended to submit a formal approach.

As reported by Goal, De Zerbi made the call to axe the forward entirely after the player repeatedly made requests to depart North London during the transfer window. Goal noted that Tottenham placed a valuation of ÂŁ35 million on Richarlison, though no acceptable offers materialized before the English deadline.

As reported by LiveScore, De Zerbi left the striker out of the matchday squad for the Newcastle fixture after the Brazilian expressed a firm desire to depart. LiveScore added that while De Zerbi respects the forward, the lack of a suitable financial resolution directly resulted in his complete removal from the Premier League roster.

As reported by Chosunbiz, Tottenham’s attack was restructured ahead of the deadline with new additions, leading to the decision to omit Richarlison from the 2026–27 registered squad. Chosunbiz highlighted that despite matching his personal best of 11 Premier League goals last season, the Brazilian was ultimately removed from De Zerbi’s tactical plans.

Background of the Development After the News

Richarlison joined Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2022 from Everton in a high-profile transfer valued at approximately ÂŁ60 million. Across his four seasons in North London, the Brazilian international experienced fluctuating form and persistent injury setbacks, though he achieved a personal best for the club last season by scoring 11 Premier League goals in 32 appearances.

Tensions mounted during the 2026 summer transfer window following the arrival of managerial and squad changes at Tottenham. With Roberto De Zerbi taking charge and Spurs completing several offensive additions, Richarlison’s regular starting role became uncertain. Over the final weeks of the window, public comments from De Zerbi and emotional statements from Richarlison highlighted a growing rift between the player and management. The collapse of deadline-day negotiations with Everton, combined with Tottenham’s decision to finalize their Premier League squad without him, marked the definitive conclusion of his active role in Spurs’ domestic campaign for the first half of the 2026–27 season.

Prediction: How This Development Can Affect Tottenham Hotspur and the Player’s Supporters

This severe operational development carries distinct ramifications for Tottenham Hotspur, the player, and the broader club fanbase:

  • Impact on Tottenham Hotspur Football Club: By omitting a high-earning senior international from their 25-man squad, Tottenham lose depth in their forward line for domestic fixtures until the January registration window opens. If a transfer to Turkey or another open market does not finalize, Spurs risk carrying an unselected player on their wage bill, potentially impacting dressing room harmony and asset valuation.
  • Impact on Richarlison’s Career: Complete exclusion from Premier League matchday squads severely limits Richarlison’s competitive match fitness during a crucial stage of his career. A failure to secure an immediate transfer before international deadline closures could jeopardize his starting position and overall inclusion in the Brazil national team setup.
  • Impact on the Supporters: For Tottenham fans, the public nature of the fallout between De Zerbi and Richarlison creates uncertainty regarding squad discipline and squad depth. Meanwhile, supporters who appreciated Richarlison’s work rate are left watching a prominent star sidelined due to administrative and transfer friction.
