Arsenal started their season in silver with a win against Manchester City, taking home the Community Shield trophy in a thrilling 3-0 victory. Their triumph at the Principality Stadium sounded a warning to their rivals of their intention to compete for more silverware this season.

In a mere 23 seconds, Mikel Arteta’s side was ahead, with Riccardo Calafiori opening up the game with the fastest goal in Community Shield history. Amid pressure from the Manchester City defense, Myles Lewis-Skelley smoothly threaded the ball through to Calafiori, who delivered the perfect finish into the bottom left corner to put Arsenal ahead.

The Gunners then extended their lead, with new signing Christos Tzolis escaping the Manchester City defense to deliver the assist to Kai Havertz. With a two goal lead and a huge disparity in quality from the two teams, it seemed that Arsenal had secured the win after just two goals.

Captain Martin Ødegaard signed off the scoresheet with the final goal of the game; a combination of another stellar assist from Tzolis and Ødegaard’s run in just ahead of Joško Gvardiol meant he had a clear shot at goal. His technique and composure had Gianluigi Donnarumma down before he even took his shot, netting the third and final goal of the game and earning himself Player of the Match.

A Stellar Defense

The confidence in their attack was enabled by the sturdiness of their defense, with David Raya making some crucial saves, supported by the backline’s strong and confident defensive moves. Lewis-Skelley committed a firm defense against Nico O’Reilly’s potential rebound goal, while Gabriel Magalhães and Ben White kept Jérémy Doku, Antoine Semenyo and Phil Foden locked down, preventing them from snatching back a goal to keep Manchester City in the game. Star striker Erling Haaland only had one shot on target throughout the whole match.

Although Arsenal’s backline was under scrutiny due to the absence of William Saliba and their collective five goals scored against them during the friendly games leading up to the match, they delivered under pressure, once again showcasing their immovable defense which was integral in their campaign for the Premier League last season. While Arsenal did display their attacking finesse, Coupled with their attacking finesse, they managed to claim their trophy with little difficulty against what looked like the shell of the Manchester City team from last season.

Next Week: The Premier League Opener

Winning the Community Shield not only allows Arsenal to start the season in style and silver, but makes a statement about their hunger for more success going forward. Arteta was pleased with his team, praising them but also claiming that “this is the standard for [them].” He stated that he believes in the team’s competitiveness if, going forward, they maintain this high standard of play. Odegaard’s post-match interview rang with similar confidence, stating that the team played “brilliant football” and voicing the team’s desire to “win everything.”

The Gunners now look forward to a strong start to the Premier League season. Coming off the back of the Community Shield win, they face Frank Lampard’s newly promoted Coventry on Friday, 21st August. With the rest of the Premier League’s top 6 undergoing and adapting to managerial changes, Arsenal seem to be in the prime position to exploit the uncertainty of their rivals and gain an early lead in the Premier League. Expectations are higher than that, however, for the team and their fans. They seek not only back-to-back Premier League titles, but the prestigious Champion’s League trophy which slipped away from them last season.

Arsenal vs Coventry will take place on Friday, 21st August 2026 at 20:00; a home game for the Gunners to begin their Premier League campaign.
